One of Kyoto’s most iconic and mesmerizing sites, Fushimi Inari Shrine, is a must-visit destination for any traveler exploring Japan. To get to Fushimi Inari Shrine using the JR Line, follow these steps:

1. Take the JR Nara Line from Kyoto Station and ride for about 5 minutes.

The History of Fushimi Inari Shrine

Fushimi Inari Taisha, dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice and prosperity, dates back over 1,300 years in 711 AD. It is the head shrine of thousands of Inari shrines found across Japan, each adorned with fox statues, believed to be messengers of the deity. The famous torii gates, donated by businesses and individuals, symbolize gratitude and wishes for success, creating a stunning tunnel effect that has captivated visitors for centuries.

My Adventure Off the Main Path

The main hiking trail can take around three hours to complete, leading visitors through a mesmerizing corridor of torii gates up Mount Inari. Instead of following the traditional path, I veered off onto a lesser-known route, which led me to a hidden shrine, a secluded woodworker’s shop, and a peaceful bamboo forest. At this shrine was a book of travelers who had visited.

Eventually, the path brought me to an exhausting but rewarding stairway that climbed the mountain—though challenging, reaching the top felt like an incredible achievement. On your way down, you get a great view of the city of Kyoto. Next time, I plan to take the main route, though I’ve heard it can be quite crowded!
